CHILDREN'S DAY 2008 - THAILAND

To celebrate Children’s Day, TASC and the English-language school, Asian Institute for Business and Communications (AIBC), offered free classes for five to 12 year olds, teaching them about drowning prevention and road safety.

The classes were held at the Electricity Generating Commission of Thailand Head Office Fair at Nonthaburi.

More than 200 children participated in the half-hour classes and 1500 people took copies of the Thai Child Injury (short) Report.

“Children’s Day should be fun, but it is also a day for learning,” AIBC Managing Director Khun Siriwimol Sithiprasasana said.

“Injury prevention isn’t just common sense. There are a lot of skills children can learn to keep them, and other children around them, safe.

“The lesson covered some of the key safety skills children in Bangkok need, as well as teaching them a few basic English words.  We’ve designed the class so even children who don’t know any English could join in and have fun.”

TASC’s Technical Director, Dr Mike Linnan, said he hoped the Children’s Day class would keep more Thai children safe from injury.

“More children over one-year-old die from injury than from all diseases combined in Thailand,” Dr Linnan said.

“We hear tragic stories of children seeing friends or siblings in trouble in the water and diving in to try and save them, only to drown as well.

“If we can teach children not to jump in, but to grab a stick and reach out to the child in trouble from the safety of the water’s edge, we could save hundreds of lives each year.”
